June 12th 2010: Spicy Rhone Valley Reds

I have a real affection for the Rhone Valley wines…white and red. When I taste a good wine from this region there seems to be an authenticity. The sense of place you hear people talking about. They have a style all their own. You can drink Syrah, Grenache etc. from other areas and Countries but they almost never remind you of these spicy beauties from Southern France. And to my mind, Cotes Du Rhones represent the best value of all for drinking inexpensive wines that add excitement and interest to the drinking experience. The lineup for this week is a stellar one. We have five from the much heralded 2007 vintage and a 2009 “little guy” that I absolutely love. These are the real deal!

THE WINES

2009 Mas de Libian, Vin de Pentanque/ Vin de Ardeche     $10

2007 Rabasse Charavin, Cotes Du Rhone Villages “Laure”   $15

2007 Catherine Le Goeuil, Cairanne           $20

2007 Le Clos De Caveau, Vacqueyras “Fruit Sauvage”   $22

2007 Andrieux & Fils, Gigondas     $27

PREMIUM POUR  $4

2007 Chateau Gigognan, Chateauneuf-Du-Pape “Vigne du Regent”  $40

I’m really impressed with all of these selections and I think you will be too!

Sandy
