Honey Harvest Week. No Better Way to Celebrate With the Bee’s Than With the B’s; Barolo, Barbaresco & Barbera ($18)
Friday, October 20th, 2017 4 pm – 7:30 pm @ Mt Tabor Fine Wines
What fun it truly is to put these weekly Friday tastings together. Not only are we finding new and exciting wines but it’s always good to revisit areas where great wines are made. Many are from regions that are changing rapidly, others remain frozen in time. This beautiful place makes some of the greatest wines in the world.
The Piemonte in NW Italy is home to both. Go up into the mountains of the far north and you have a whole different way of doing things than it’s famous Nebbiolo bro to the south… Barolo and Barbaresco.
While there are many different grapes grown all over the area, it’s the red grape Nebbiolo that is the king of kings. Barbera is the workhorse that most in the area enjoy on a daily basis while the Nebb’s are saved for special occasions. HOWEVER… there are certain little zones where Barbera is king. The main area is Monferrato while Asti is the larger region. When you find a wine like our number 4, the 2006 Grillo “Igiea” Barbera, it can rival many a Barolo/ Barb! The Igiea is now 11 years past harvest and giving its all. Beautiful leathery, spicy earth tones followed by palate sensuality. Not sure about you, but palate sensuality gets big points with me!
