Oct 8th 2010: The Wines of Argentina's Nicholas Catena

Rarely do we do a tasting of just one wineries wines. But with Catena and founder Nicolas Catena these wines are at the very cutting edge of Argentinean quality  and, in fact, Nicolas is the very reason for the quality surge in recent years in Argentina. Many call him the Robert Mondavi of Argentina and so he is.  A few decades ago he turned the wine industry down there on its ear by committing to low yields in very old vineyards that had previously been way overcropped into basic swill. He set the bar high and many have followed. If you’ve ever enjoyed a tasty bottle of Malbec or Cab from there you can thank him.

We’ll be featuring 3 levels of quality from the winery. Tilia is a label he developed to offer delicious wines at affordable prices. The Catena level is second tier and the wines are benchmarks! And at the top level, Catena-Alta, the wines are as good as it gets! So come on down Friday and taste some awesome wines and experience  the heart of the Argentinean wine industry.

The Lineup  ($15)

08 Catena, Chardonnay       $21

09 Tilia, Malbec-Syrah    $10

07 Catena, Cabernet Sauvignon    $21

08 Catena, Malbec     $26

06 Catena Alta, Cabernet Sauvignon   $57

Premium Pour ($6)

07 Catena Alta, Malbec      $59

I’m looking forward to this one.

Sandy
