May 14th 2010: Southern Italian Reds
The theme for this tasting was suggested by our friend, customer and rocket scientist (really!) Jerry. See, we really do listen to our customers. I’m always looking for new ideas for tastings and if you have something interesting to offer up in the way of ideas let me know. Like Jerry, if you suggest and we use your idea you will get a FREE tasting (the flight of five). So Jer, come on down!
In the past we’ve done the “road less traveled” wine theme and certainly these areas fit that theme. But keeping it in the South and including, possibly, the Islands, is a bit of a twist on an old theme. Anyway, here’s the lineup. The wines from the South have a very warm, inviting character…….just like me!
THE WINES;
2008 Primaterra, Primitivo $8/ Puglia (Apulia)
2007 Colosi, Rosso Nero D’Avola $12/ Sicily
2007 Bisceglia, Terra Di Vulcano $15/ Basilicata
Aglianico del Vulture
2008 Ippolito, Calabrise (Gaglioppo-the grape) $16/ Calabria
2005 Tenuta Delle Terre Nere, Etna Rosso “Calderara Sottana” $23/ Sicily
Premium Pour ($3)
1995 Mastroberardino, Taurasi “Radici” $30/ Campania
Yep, a 15 year old, perfectly stored wine from Southern Italy. If you like older wines you will LOVE this! If you don’t, maybe not. If you don’t know here’s a great opportunity to taste one and see.
The 3rd and 5th wines were grown on the slopes of Volcano’s. You can feel the warmth. Needless to say, this is an explosive set of wines (please forgive me!)
Sandy
