April 23rd 2010: French Whites- Oh La La!
Anytime I do a tasting of the various wines from France, red or white, I feel like a golfer getting the opportunity to play Augusta National! What fun! I often say, if all I had to drink for the rest of my life were French wines I would be very content! Think about it; Do you like sparkling wines? How about a glass of Champagne. Reds? Burgundy! Only the best Pinot Noir in the world. Bordeaux? Cabernet and Merlot of unparalleled quality. Rhone? In my opinion the best red blends…period. Maybe a bit of white? Burgundy? The finest Chardonnay of all. Alsace? Great Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewurtz, etc. Loire Valley? Muscadet, Sancerre (Sauv Blanc at its best), Savennieres and Vouvray- among the longest lived wines of any color. And some dessert wine after dinner? Maybe a bit of Chateau d’Yquem from Sauternes? And I’m sure I’m leaving some out. As you can see, France has it all. And it was very easy and a pleasure putting this “French Whites” tasting together. I would highly recommend attending this one. If you tend to drink only reds this could be the tasting to turn you on to whites. Frankly, I’d be bummed if I only drank reds when it’s 90 degrees out. Or I only drink red when I’m having Lobster. And on & on. That’s the great thing about wine. There’s a wine for every occasion or meal. Limiting yourself is limiting the pleasures that wine can give.
